  • 1/2 cup dark rum or bourbon swap for apple brandy for a fruitier flavor
  • 3 thin slices fresh ginger for a zesty kick
  • 1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg grate just before adding

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Citrus zester or peeler
  • Fine mesh strainer

Method

  1. Gather all your ingredients and tools; this makes the process smooth and enjoyable.
  2. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, orange zest, honey, ginger slices, and nutmeg to the saucepan.
  3. Pour in the dark rum or bourbon, then add 3 cups of water to the saucepan.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and slowly bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, listening for a soft bubbling sound.
  5. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally to release and meld the flavors.
  6. Once fragrant and infused, remove the saucepan from heat. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a serving pitcher, discarding the spice solids.
  7. Taste the cocktail and adjust sweetness if desired by adding more honey or syrup, stirring gently to combine.
  8. Pour the warm cocktail into mugs or heatproof glasses, letting the steam rise and aromatic spices fill the air.
  9. Garnish each mug with an extra cinnamon stick or a twist of citrus for a festive touch, if desired.
  10. Serve immediately while warm, enjoying the comforting aroma and layered flavors with friends or family.

Notes

Ensure the mixture is kept at a gentle simmer; avoid boiling to prevent burning the spices. Add citrus zest at the end for maximum brightness and aroma.
