Ingredients

  • 16 ounces mushrooms preferably cremini or button mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for sautéing
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • to taste salt

Equipment

  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Spatula or wooden spoon
  • Cutting board
  • Knife

Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil until shimmering.
  2. Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and spread them out in an even layer. Let them cook undisturbed for about 3-4 minutes until they start to brown and release their moisture.
  3. Stir the mushrooms with a spatula or spoon, scraping up browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Continue cooking for another 3-4 minutes until they are tender and golden brown.
  4. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly until fragrant.
  5. Sprinkle the freshly ground black pepper over the mushrooms and stir well to combine, allowing the pepper to release its aroma and flavor.
  6. Season with a pinch of salt to enhance the savory flavor, then cook for another 1-2 minutes to meld the flavors together.
  7. Remove the skillet from heat and serve the mushrooms hot, garnished with additional black pepper if desired.

Notes

For extra richness, add a splash of soy sauce or a knob of butter towards the end of cooking.
